Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni stood at a press conference on July 17 and did something coaches rarely do: he stopped talking tactics and started talking legacy. Describing 39-year-old Lionel Messi ahead of the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, Scaloni called the forward “pure history” and told reporters to savor the moment.
“Reaching a final at 39 years of age is unbelievable. We must enjoy him as it happens,” Scaloni said. He added that “there are no longer any doubts that he is the greatest footballer in history.”
