Pavel Durov is done playing defense. The Telegram founder fired back against mounting accusations that his messaging platform is a haven for criminal activity, arguing the narrative is a coordinated punishment for refusing to do governments’ dirty work. In a public statement on August 24, Durov framed the controversy in blunt terms: when Telegram refuses political favors, “local media and ‘non-governmental’ organizations launch orchestrated campaigns portraying Telegram as a cesspool of crime.” The accusations he’s pushing back against are not trivial. They include allegations of hosting child exploitation material and facilitating terrorism.
