Of the thousands of lawsuits Meta has accumulated over child safety on its platforms, the one heading to trial in Oakland, California may be the one that actually keeps Mark Zuckerberg up at night. Four states, California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, are seeking up to $1.4 trillion in civil penalties. To put that number in perspective, Meta’s market cap was approximately $1.5 trillion at the time of July 2026 disclosures. The states are essentially asking for the company’s entire value, give or take a few billion. What’s actually at stake The lawsuit alleges that Facebook and Instagram were intentionally designed with addictive features that specifically target young users. The states argue these claims are justified under their respective consumer protection laws, framing the case not as a vague moral panic but as a straightforward violation of existing statute.
