Meta rolls out Meta AI chatbot in Threads DMs as Big Tech’s AI race heats up

Meta just dropped its AI chatbot into Threads direct messages, giving users the ability to have private conversations with an AI assistant inside the app. The move comes after Threads DMs launched globally on July 1, 2025, following limited tests in markets including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. With Threads now claiming 500 million monthly active users as of June 2026, the AI integration gives Meta a massive testing ground for its conversational AI ambitions.
