Mistral AI, the French startup that has made a habit of punching above its weight against American AI giants, just locked in a partnership with HUMAIN worth hundreds of millions of euros. The deal pairs Mistral’s model-building expertise with Saudi Arabia’s deep pockets and regional ambitions, creating what amounts to a sovereign AI alliance designed to keep data and compute power outside the orbit of US hyperscalers. HUMAIN, a relatively new entity operating under Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, will provide the data center infrastructure. Mistral will bring the brains.
