NATO allies intercepted and disrupted a covert Russian naval exercise near Norway’s Svalbard archipelago this spring, preventing what appeared to be a rehearsal for sabotaging undersea fiber-optic cables critical to Western communications and space operations. The operation marks one of the most direct confrontations between NATO and Russian naval forces over infrastructure security in recent memory. The Russian exercise, directed by the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research (known by its Russian acronym GUGI), deployed deep-sea submersibles to simulate disabling two vital subsea cables. Those cables, each stretching roughly 1,400 km and plunging to depths of 2,700 meters, connect Svalbard to mainland Norway and carry data from the SvalSat ground station, a facility within NASA’s Near Space Network.
