OpenAI provides grants to 14 projects enhancing economic opportunity

OpenAI is putting money where its white papers are. The company announced a $1 million grant program backing 14 independent research projects designed to study how artificial intelligence can widen economic opportunity and strengthen societal resilience. The initiative drew over 400 proposals from around the world, with selected projects spanning the US, European Union, Brazil, Singapore, and South Korea. Each project will run for six months, with results expected in 2027. From policy paper to funding pipeline This grant program isn’t a standalone act of corporate generosity. It’s a direct sequel to OpenAI’s April 2026 paper, “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age,” in which the company pledged to support external research and policy development. Beyond the $1M in direct grants, OpenAI is also offering up to $1 million in API credits to the cohort. That brings the total potential commitment to $2 million, giving researchers both funding and compute resources to run their experiments. The 14 projects are split into two buckets.
