Pixelmon, the monster-collecting NFT franchise that once embodied the dream of blending blockchain collectibles with real gameplay, has pulled the plug on its entire gaming division. The project announced on September 14 that it would cease all game development, lay off its gaming team, and take its titles offline after outside publishers delivered a verdict that was, in the project’s own words, “not too bad but not good enough.” Pixelmon raised roughly $70 million from its 2022 NFT mint and another $8 million in a 2024 seed round backed by Animoca Brands and Delphi Ventures. All of that capital, and the best a three-week publisher test could muster was a lukewarm shrug. What actually happened External publishers spent approximately three weeks evaluating Pixelmon’s games, focusing on player acquisition and retention metrics. The results weren’t catastrophic.
