The Premier League is about to pull back one of football’s last curtains. Starting with the 2025/26 season, live broadcasts will include audio from player-referee conversations, giving millions of viewers a front-row seat to the arguments, explanations, and occasional banter that have always been lip-read at best. The move is part of an expansion of the league’s RefCam system, which straps lightweight head-mounted cameras to referees. Until now, the footage and audio captured by those devices has been used primarily for post-match review and the occasional viral social media clip. Broadcasting it in near-real-time is a different beast entirely. From trial run to live mic This didn’t happen overnight. The Premier League ran its first RefCam trial during a Crystal Palace vs. Manchester United match in May 2024. That test was essentially a proof of concept, showing that the hardware, supplied by Riedel Communications, could capture usable footage and audio without interfering with the referee’s job.
