Russia strikes five vessels in Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, escalating maritime conflict

Russia’s Defence Ministry announced on August 25 that its forces struck five vessels and port infrastructure across Ukraine’s Black Sea coastline. The targets included three cargo ships and a tanker at Pivdennyi, the deep-water port also known as Yuzhny, along with a cargo ship at the port of Odesa. Beyond the vessels themselves, Russia claimed hits on infrastructure at both ports and fuel storage facilities in the nearby port city of Chornomorsk. The tit-for-tat campaign at sea Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck over 100 Russian vessels, primarily targeting shadow fleet tankers and cargo ships used to circumvent Western sanctions. Much of that campaign has been carried out through drone operations under the banner of Operation MoLoChKa, which launched in July 2026.
