Solana has quietly become the dominant chain for x402, the micropayment protocol that lets AI agents pay for APIs and data using USDC. As of mid-August 2026, Solana accounted for approximately 70% of monthly x402 protocol volume, processing a total transaction volume of around $24.24 million over the prior 30 days. What x402 is and why it matters The protocol, developed by the Coinbase Developer Platform team, repurposes the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code to allow seamless, programmable payments between machines. An AI agent needs weather data from an API? It pays in USDC at the moment of the request, no subscription, no invoice, no human in the loop. Cumulative activity across all chains using x402 is estimated to fall somewhere between 120 million and 187 million transactions, depending on which tracker you consult. Solana alone has processed over 35 million of those cumulatively.
