Stanley Druckenmiller, one of the most respected macro investors alive, just publicly torched a bond market strategy designed by his own former protégé. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published on August 24, Druckenmiller called Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s plan to double the size of long-dated bond buybacks “a mistake far larger than $4 billion suggests.” The target of his ire: a Treasury announcement on August 19 expanding buyback operations from $2 billion to a minimum of $4 billion per operation, focused on bonds with maturities ranging from 10 to 30 years.
