Stifel upgrades Microsoft to buy from hold, signaling confidence in Azure and AI growth

Stifel just did the Wall Street equivalent of saying “actually, I changed my mind.” Seven months after downgrading Microsoft to Hold over concerns about Azure growth and AI spending, the firm flipped back to Buy on September 22, raising its price target to $575 from $530. With Microsoft shares closing around $498 before the upgrade, Stifel’s new target implies roughly 16% upside. The stock responded with a 1.3% gain. What changed since February Analyst Brad Reback, who leads Stifel’s coverage, built his bull case around a thesis of sustained mid-to-upper-teens revenue growth. Microsoft’s trailing twelve-month revenue growth already sits at 17.79%. Reback pointed to several catalysts that weren’t in play when Stifel downgraded the stock in February 2026. Contract adjustments with OpenAI simplified certain billing arrangements, which had previously been a source of concern for investors trying to model the financial relationship between the two companies. Azure’s operations have improved meaningfully, and new data-center capacity is coming online.
