Tesla launches ByteDance’s Doubao large model for in-vehicle systems across China

Tesla started rolling out a software update on July 31 that embeds ByteDance’s Doubao large language model into every vehicle it sells in China. The over-the-air update, version 2026.14.13, covers the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X, effectively replacing the company’s existing voice assistant with a locally built AI that can handle everything from climate controls to bedtime stories. It’s the first time Tesla has handed over its in-car AI duties to a third-party LLM in any market. What Doubao actually does inside a Tesla The Doubao integration is more than a voice assistant reskin. The system processes real-time information queries, supports fluid natural language conversations, and handles vehicle functions like adjusting the cabin temperature or setting navigation routes. Doubao supports up to 18 Chinese dialects and multiple voice tones, which addresses a longstanding pain point for Tesla owners in China. Mandarin-only voice systems tend to frustrate users who speak Cantonese, Shanghainese, Sichuanese, or any of the country’s many regional languages.
