Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi in Austin with a deliberately quiet rollout

Tesla quietly launched its Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas, on September 3, 2026. Public rides began the following day at 5 p.m. local time through the Robotaxi app, available to an invite-only group of early riders. The launch notably lacked traditional media coverage and Elon Musk’s presence. What the Cybercab actually is The Cybercab is a dedicated two-seat electric vehicle built from the ground up for driverless operation. It has no steering wheel and no pedals, which makes it legally and physically unsuitable for human takeover mid-ride. The vehicle carries a drag coefficient of less than 0.20. For context, a typical sedan sits around 0.28 to 0.30. It is manufactured at Gigafactory Texas, the same Austin-area facility where Tesla builds the Model Y and Cybertruck.
