Tesla registers local entity in Vietnam, eyes EV market entry

Tesla has officially planted its flag in Vietnam. The company registered Tesla Motors Vietnam Limited Liability Company in Ho Chi Minh City on September 11, marking its first legal presence in a country that has quietly become Southeast Asia’s largest electric vehicle market. The new entity carries a charter capital of roughly VND 77.7 billion, approximately $3 million. The registration covers wholesale and retail sales of automobiles and parts, plus import, export, and distribution activities. Manufacturing is not included. Walking into VinFast’s living room Vietnam’s EV market isn’t some greenfield opportunity waiting to be tapped. It’s a market that already has a landlord, and that landlord is VinFast. The homegrown automaker holds roughly 92% of Vietnam’s domestic EV sector as of mid-2026. VinFast delivered approximately 175,000 EVs across 2025 and kept the momentum rolling into 2026, pushing out over 154,000 vehicles in just the first eight months of the year. In August 2026 alone, VinFast delivered 20,161 EVs, accounting for 42% of total vehicle sales that month, not just EV sales, but all vehicle sales in the country.
