UK economy unexpectedly expands in June amid World Cup boost

The UK economy posted a surprise 0.3% expansion in June, snapping out of a flat May and a dip in April. The Office for National Statistics released the figures on August 13, crediting an unlikely duo for the turnaround: the FIFA World Cup and unusually warm weather. For the second quarter as a whole, GDP grew 0.4%, a step down from the 0.6% recorded in Q1 2026. The services sector did most of the heavy lifting, expanding 0.4% over the quarter.
