UK watchdog weighs tokenized gold reforms to bolster financial market efficiency

4 hours ago 1

The UK Financial Conduct Authority is weighing targeted exemptions from UK fund regulations for certain tokenized gold products and market infrastructure, according to proposals to be presented on Monday. The move aims to encourage innovation in the bullion market and help London maintain its dominance as China seeks to establish itself as a competing gold hub.

Tokenization could make physical gold easier to transfer across digital markets and unlock more bullion as collateral for financial transactions. The FCA said no decisions had been made, while the Treasury and Bank of England are involved in discussions on a potential framework. The central bank is separately considering broader rules for tokenized collateral.
