Ukraine strikes Syzran refinery in Russia’s Volga region, escalating deep-range energy campaign

Ukrainian forces hit the Syzran Oil Refinery in Russia’s Samara Oblast overnight on September 14-15, destroying three fuel storage tanks and damaging eight more, according to Ukrainian defense officials. The strike also reportedly knocked out the AVT-6 primary crude distillation unit, one of the facility’s core processing components. The Syzran plant, operated by Rosneft, sits more than 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The facility processes roughly 8.5 to 8.9 million metric tons of crude annually, which works out to about 3% of Russia’s total refining capacity. A pattern of precision, not coincidence This is the third major strike on Syzran in roughly four months, and each one has been progressively more disruptive. On May 21, 2026, Ukrainian drones hit the CDU-6 distillation unit, which handled over 70% of the refinery’s processing capacity.
