United Nations calls on AI firms to set emissions targets as data centers devour global energy

The United Nations is done asking nicely. On June 23, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative during London Climate Action Week, calling on major AI companies to fully disclose their carbon emissions, water consumption, and land use. The initiative also sets a concrete benchmark: 100% renewable energy powering AI data centers by 2030. Current projections suggest data centers could consume up to 945 terawatt-hours of electricity annually by 2030, roughly 3% of total global energy demand. To put that in perspective, that figure would exceed the energy consumption of all but five countries on Earth. The numbers behind the pressure The initiative didn’t materialize out of thin air. It was prompted by a June 2026 report from the UN University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, which mapped out the environmental footprint of AI infrastructure in sobering detail.
