US housing starts fell to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.275 million units in August, dropping 2.6% from July and landing well below the 1.31 to 1.32 million units economists had penciled in. The reading marks one of the weakest construction paces since the pandemic era, and it arrived on the heels of July’s already brutal 12.4% decline.
