US widens AI-driven investment gap with Europe as private funding hits $109B

The United States poured $109.1 billion into private AI investment in 2024, a figure so dominant it accounts for roughly 81% of all global private AI funding. Europe, meanwhile, is scrambling to respond with a €10 billion infrastructure plan that won’t even begin deploying until August 2026. From 2013 to 2024, total cumulative private AI investment in the US reached approximately $470 billion. The EU’s total over that same stretch? About $50 billion. The numbers tell a lopsided story According to the Stanford HAI 2025 AI Index Report, the disparity extends well beyond raw dollars. In 2024, US institutions created 40 notable AI models. Europe produced three. Generative AI saw investment climb from $21.8 billion in 2023 to $25.4 billion in 2024. By early 2026, 43% of US workers reported using AI tools in their jobs.
