Ethereum Economic Zone aims to stitch fragmented rollups back together

The Gnosis and Zisk-led framework lets apps on specialized chains call each other in a single transaction, using ETH as gas Ethereum spent years scaling by spinning off rollups. It worked, sort of: the network got faster and cheaper, and its liquidity ended up scattered across a couple dozen islands. The Ethereum Economic Zone, or EEZ, is an attempt to build bridges between those islands without making anyone leave home. The open-source framework connects apps on specialized chains through Ethereum’s neutral infrastructure, and it is now moving from slideware toward working code. What the EEZ actually does The EEZ was co-initiated by Gnosis and Zisk, with funding support from the Ethereum Foundation. It was introduced by Friederike Ernst of Gnosis and Jordi Baylina of Zisk, and announced at EthCC in Cannes around March 29-30, 2026. The core pitch is atomic cross-chain execution. A contract on one EEZ rollup, or on Ethereum mainnet, can call a contract on another within a single transaction, with everything anchored to Ethereum. Rather than treating rollups as independent chains, the EEZ frames them as extensions of Ethereum itself. Specialized rollups can still be tuned for particu...
