Google tests new Projects implementation on Gemini Desktop app with NotebookLM integration

Google is rolling out a significant organizational upgrade to its Gemini AI application, introducing a feature called Notebooks that turns scattered conversations into structured project workspaces. The feature, which was originally tested under the name “Projects” in late 2025, now includes direct integration with NotebookLM, one of Google’s most popular research tools. The upgrade launched on April 8 for paid subscribers and expanded to free users on April 17. What Notebooks actually does The core idea is straightforward: users can organize their conversations, uploaded files, and research sources into dedicated workspaces rather than hunting through a chronological list of chats. The more interesting piece is the bidirectional synchronization with NotebookLM. Sources and chats sync in real time between the two platforms, which means users can access NotebookLM’s specialized tools, like Audio Overviews and Infographics, directly from within Gemini.
