Indian financial institutions sell record dollar bonds in 2026

Indian banks are on a dollar bond binge, and the numbers are getting hard to ignore. As of early August 2026, Indian financial institutions have raised $10.8 billion through dollar-denominated bonds, a pace that could push the year’s total to an unprecedented $43 billion if the current momentum holds. At the center of this story is the RBI’s concessional foreign exchange swap facility, which has reduced hedging costs by as much as 1.5 percentage points. The facility, available until December 31, 2026, has already supported over $3.3 billion in qualifying fundraising as of late July. Total mobilization under related RBI measures has reached approximately $20.72 billion. India Exim Bank kicked off the year in January with a $1 billion dual-tranche sale that included a 30-year bond, a first for any Indian banking institution. HDFC Bank followed in June with a $750 million five-year bond that priced at a record spread of just 90 basis points over US Treasuries.
