Japan is exploring a somewhat unconventional path to fund roughly $33 billion worth of natural gas power projects on American soil. Rather than relying on its own banking giants, Japanese entities are in early-stage talks with foreign lenders, including JPMorgan Chase, to secure the dollar financing needed for facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas. The deal and why it matters The $33 billion in planned power projects falls under Japan’s much larger $550 billion investment commitment to the United States. As of mid-July 2026, only about $2.2 billion has actually been committed to related energy projects. That’s less than 1% of the total pledge, which puts the ambition in perspective. The financing discussions reportedly involve potential guarantees from Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), Japan’s export credit agency.
